Violence and security threats dominate world news, from deadly Russian strikes in Ukraine to alleged terror plots and attacks stretching from Britain and the United States to Poland and Nigeria. At the same time, courts and public institutions are at the center of accountability battles over abuse, housing and migration policy.

Russian missile and drone strikes kill at least 21 people across Ukraine, with officials in some reports putting the toll at 26, including children. The attacks hit multiple regions overnight and are followed by another strike on Kyiv on Wednesday evening, as emergency crews respond to fires, damaged buildings and injuries caused by blasts and falling debris.

A 28-year-old man, Joshua Kerry, appears in court in Britain charged with preparing terrorist acts in connection with an alleged attempt to break into Nigel Farage’s home, and separately with the murder of former minister Ann Widdecombe. Prosecutors say Farage’s front door frame is damaged and a bottle of lighter fluid is left in the porch.

U.S. authorities say they foil an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to carry out a mass shooting at Minnesota’s Mall of America. An 18-year-old, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, is arrested after trying to buy an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from an undercover FBI agent as part of the alleged plan.

Nigerian police say 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while travelling through Imo State have been rescued. Security forces including the DSS and military join the operation, which officials describe as intelligence-led, and the victims are freed in Amakohia Ubi village in Owerri West local government area.

A 19-year-old student is arrested after a knife attack at a vocational school in Ostrołęka, northern Poland. Authorities say several students, teachers and bystanders are injured when the attacker uses a sharp object on school grounds, and multiple victims are taken to hospital.

Former Broome bishop Christopher Saunders is sentenced in Australia to six and a half years in prison for sexually abusing two Indigenous men. The 76-year-old is convicted over offences that include unlawful or indecent assault and one count of sexual penetration without consent.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security proposes a $70,000 fee for international students seeking work authorization under the Optional Practical Training program. The plan appears in a government notice and would sharply raise the cost of post-study employment for foreign graduates as part of a broader tightening of visa and enrollment policy.

Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old Madrid pensioner whose eviction sparked housing protests across Spain, has died. She had been hospitalized since police and social workers removed her from her apartment, and her case became a rallying point for housing activists protesting evictions and insecurity for older tenants.
