The day’s health news centers on vulnerable people at either end of care: children facing acute danger and patients gaining access to treatment. Alongside signs of recovery in one high-profile case, the broader picture is of health systems responding to trauma, malnutrition and rare disease.

UNICEF warns that about 1 million children in Afghanistan with severe acute malnutrition face a serious risk of death without rapid treatment. The agency says many children arriving at hospitals are extremely young, including babies under six months, underscoring the severity of the crisis and the pressure on already strained health services.

Ireland’s HSE approves reimbursement for Skyclarys for patients with Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare inherited neurological disorder. The decision by the health service’s senior management follows debate over the therapy’s cost and clears the way for eligible patients to access the treatment through the public system.

A three-year-old boy seriously injured in a zoo crocodile enclosure has been discharged from hospital and returned home. His family says he is settling back in, happy to be home, sleeping in his own bed and playing with his toys after the traumatic incident.

Champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle is taken to hospital after a fall in the opening race at Bellewstown. The incident prompts the abandonment of the rest of the meeting, bringing immediate concern over the rider’s condition and halting the day’s racing card.
