A mix of accountability, diplomacy and tragedy drives the day’s world news. Police inquiries touch royalty and Jeffrey Epstein, diplomatic protocol breaks down over Russia, and two separate helicopter disasters underscore how quickly routine travel can turn fatal.

A G20 tradition is scrapped after European foreign ministers refuse to pose for a group photo with Russia’s Sergey Lavrov in Atlanta. The United States cancels the “family photo” rather than stage the encounter, underscoring the continuing strain over Russia’s war in Ukraine and the difficulty of maintaining normal diplomatic symbolism.

Police Scotland opens early-stage, evidence-led inquiries into information about time Prince Andrew, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell allegedly spent at Balmoral. The investigation focuses on visits linked to King Charles III’s private Scottish estate and marks a fresh law-enforcement look at longstanding allegations surrounding Andrew’s association with Epstein and Maxwell.

A helicopter carrying pilgrims crashes near Joshimath in India’s Uttarakhand state, killing six people including the pilot. The aircraft had taken off from Badrinath and lost communication shortly after crossing the Joshimath valley. Search and rescue teams respond, and authorities ground the operator’s fleet while the cause is investigated.

Two helicopters collide in mid-air near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon, killing all three people on board. The dead include a flight instructor, a student pilot and the pilot of the second aircraft. Authorities say the crash happens Thursday afternoon, with wreckage reported in a farm field near the airport.

Christa Pike says she is in constant physical and mental pain after surviving a failed execution attempt in Tennessee last month. Pike, convicted in the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, says two doses of pentobarbital left lasting effects, bringing renewed attention to the state’s execution procedures and the aftermath of the botched lethal injection.

Pope Leo XIV becomes the first known pontiff to vote in a U.S. national election, casting a mail-in ballot in the midterms. The Chicago-born pope submits his ballot from Chicago ahead of the Nov. 3 vote. The Vatican says he has voted whenever he has been eligible, making this a notable first for the papacy.

Nigerian politician Omoyele Sowore says he and members of his team are attacked by armed thugs in Ado-Ekiti and that he is treated in hospital for injuries. He alleges state-backed involvement, including the Department of State Services. Police and Sowore offer differing accounts as the confrontation becomes a new flashpoint in Nigerian politics.

ICE officer Mario Alberto Morales is indicted in Harris County, Texas, after prosecutors say he struck a man with an SUV in Houston on Oct. 10. The man is seriously injured. The case puts a federal immigration officer into local criminal proceedings over an incident that prosecutors say caused major harm.
