Security forces respond to sharply different threats across several regions, from mass killings in South Africa to an explosives investigation near a U.S.-used air base in England and a deadly border clash in Afghanistan. Two mass shootings in South Africa leave at least 27 people dead in attacks hours apart. In one, gunmen open fire at a bar near Johannesburg, killing 17 people. In the other, 10 people are killed near Cape Town. Police launch a manhunt as investigators work to establish who carried out the attacks and why.
British police investigate a major incident near RAF Fairford in southwest England, a base used by the United States, after arresting several men on suspicion of explosives offences. Bomb-disposal experts examine vehicles at the scene while officers evacuate nearby homes and secure the area with an armed cordon.
