Justice, security and accountability dominate the day’s world news, from a new prison sentence in a long-running sexual assault case to an international war-crimes conviction and a mass shooting in South Africa. Alongside those developments, regulators and researchers warn of risks that reach far beyond any single country, from online child safety to deadly heat.

At least 11 people are killed and three others injured when gunmen open fire at a house party in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, South Africa. Police say three armed men enter the gathering on Tuesday and shoot guests. A woman believed to be pregnant is among the dead, and authorities are investigating the motive.

Harvey Weinstein is sentenced in Manhattan to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former TV production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. The punishment follows a retrial after earlier proceedings are overturned. The International Criminal Court convicts former Central African Republic militia leader Mahamat Said Abdel Kani of crimes against humanity, including torture, persecution and unlawful imprisonment. A research assessment warns that this year’s El Niño and record global heat could lead to as many as 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide by late February. The estimate highlights the human toll of extreme temperatures and adds urgency to public health planning as many regions face prolonged periods of dangerous heat.

The case tests how aggressively regulators will enforce new online safety requirements for major digital platforms.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins silver in the women’s 49-kilogram event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
