Violence and accountability dominate the world news day, from a major terrorism conviction in Sri Lanka to a suspected plot against Jewish targets in Britain and a child killing in Australia. At the same time, a deadly typhoon in Japan underscores how quickly natural disasters can become national emergencies, while a Mississippi grand jury’s decision closes off criminal charges in a closely watched death case.

Typhoon Dujuan tears through eastern Japan after making landfall, bringing record rainfall, flooding, landslides and widespread transport and power disruption near Tokyo. At least a handful of people are reported dead, dozens are injured and several remain missing as emergency crews continue search-and-rescue operations in some of the hardest-hit areas.

A Sri Lankan court convicts 15 men over the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, one of the country’s deadliest attacks in recent history. The defendants are found to have coordinated or supported the suicide bombings that struck churches and luxury hotels, killing more than 260 people, including foreign nationals.

Counterterrorism police in the UK arrest two men after disrupting what they describe as a suspected terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in the Manchester area. The operation points to continuing security concerns around antisemitic violence, with investigators now working to determine the scope and intent of the alleged plan.

A woman is charged with murder after a five-year-old boy is fatally stabbed in Valley Heights in New South Wales’ Blue Mountains. Police say the child is found dead in a parked car, while a woman and two other children are discovered critically injured and taken for treatment.

A grand jury in Mississippi declines to bring criminal charges in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. The Jackson County district attorney says the panel finds insufficient evidence of criminal wrongdoing, leaving no indictments in a case that had drawn significant public attention.

Six-year-old Chinese speedcuber Lian Yunzhi sets a new women’s world record in the 3x3 Rubik’s Cube at World Cube Association-certified competition. Her average time comes in under 4.5 seconds, and she reportedly breaks the mark more than once during a standout performance.
