The day in world news is shaped by remembrance and repression, as the United States marks a quarter-century since the Sept. 11 attacks while Hong Kong hands prison terms to organizers of its once-prominent Tiananmen vigil. Elsewhere, authorities pursue cross-border fraud cases and Norway’s royal family enters another period of mourning.

The United States marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with memorials, vigils, and moments of silence across the country. Ceremonies take place in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville.

President Donald Trump marks the 9/11 anniversary with remarks at the Pentagon, one of the three sites attacked in 2001. His appearance comes as commemorations unfold nationwide, with the anniversary focusing renewed attention on the victims killed in Arlington, New York, and Pennsylvania.

A Hong Kong court sentences three activists linked to the city’s annual Tiananmen Square vigil to prison terms of roughly five to seven years under the national security law. The case targets figures associated with one of the city’s best-known acts of public remembrance and underscores the tightening limits on political dissent.

South Africa extradites six Nigerian men to the United States over alleged online romance scams that authorities say targeted more than 100 women. Police say the suspects were transferred from a correctional facility in Cape Town to the airport for handover, in a case involving alleged losses of about 100 million rand.

Norway’s Princess Astrid dies at 94, just days after appearing at the funeral of her brother, King Harald V. Her death brings fresh mourning for the royal family after a week already marked by the king’s funeral and public ceremonies in his honor.
