Tech news is led by a potential blockbuster industrial software deal and a widening argument over how the industry talks about artificial intelligence. Alongside big-money consolidation and AI governance, the day also brings a smaller but telling mix of branding moves and consumer discounting.

Schneider Electric is in advanced talks to acquire engineering software company PTC for more than $20 billion, a deal that would be the French group’s largest ever. The move would deepen Schneider’s push into industrial software, pairing its automation and energy-management businesses with PTC’s design, product lifecycle and industrial IoT tools.

Sam Altman sharply criticizes efforts to frame AI in spiritual or quasi-religious terms, saying it is dangerous to grant models moral authority or ask people to surrender judgment to them. The OpenAI chief casts that language as a safety issue, escalating a broader dispute over how AI companies describe increasingly capable systems.

A former Anthropic researcher is set to testify at a New York City Council hearing on artificial intelligence, bringing an industry insider into a local policy debate over AI oversight. The appearance signals how municipal governments are increasingly engaging with fast-moving questions around deployment, risk and accountability.

Elon Musk says SpaceX’s AI unit will be renamed from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, replacing the familiar “AI” label with “SI” for “super intelligence.” The change follows his public discussion of terminology and suggests another attempt to shape how advanced machine intelligence is branded and talked about.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 fall to $179 in an early Prime Day promotion, a steep discount from their usual $249 price. The offer places one of Apple’s flagship audio products near its lowest seen price and highlights how major shopping events are increasingly used to drive early consumer tech demand.
