Tech news today centers on the infrastructure around artificial intelligence as much as the models themselves. Companies are reshuffling leadership, chasing scale, and trying to impose more trust and control on AI systems as adoption spreads into consumer apps, retail, and cross-border dealmaking.

Google says the Gemini app now has more than 1 billion monthly users, a milestone it describes as the fastest growth of any product in the company’s history. The figure underscores how quickly generative AI tools are moving into the mainstream as Google pushes Gemini across search, Android, and its wider software ecosystem.

Anthropic says future Claude releases will include invisible, machine-readable watermarks in AI-generated text and digitally signed provenance metadata for supported media. The company says the system is designed to help identify Claude-created content across platforms, including cases where text is copied and pasted outside its original context.

AI startup Manus returns to operating independently after Chinese regulators block Meta’s planned roughly $2 billion acquisition of the company. The reversal interrupts a major AI deal and highlights the geopolitical and regulatory pressure surrounding cross-border technology acquisitions, especially where advanced AI capabilities are involved.

Brad Lightcap is leaving OpenAI after years as one of the company’s most prominent executives. He tells staff he plans to start something new and says he hopes to advance OpenAI’s mission from a different vantage point, following a period in which he no longer serves as chief operating officer.

Target appoints Chandhu Nair as its first chief AI officer, with his start set for August 24. The move gives the retailer a dedicated senior executive for artificial intelligence as large chains increasingly embed AI more deeply into products, operations, and customer-facing services.

Jennifer Bailey, the Apple executive who leads Apple Pay and Wallet, is set to retire in October. Her departure marks a leadership change in a key part of Apple’s services business, where digital payments and identity features have become increasingly central to the company’s consumer platform.
