Artificial intelligence is colliding with regulation, labor and infrastructure in unusually direct ways today. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul is imposing a one-year pause on permits for new hyperscale data centers, a striking attempt to get ahead of the power, environmental and grid strains created by the AI boom. At the same time, Meta is facing a federal lawsuit from 26 current and former employees who say AI-driven workplace systems helped steer layoffs toward workers on disability, medical or family leave, underscoring growing anxiety about algorithmic management inside companies. Google, by contrast, is pushing AI further into everyday use, rolling out Gemini inside Chrome for UK desktop users. Abroad, Australia’s eSafety regulator says major tech firms still have serious gaps in stopping online child sexual extortion, while India’s Karnataka state is betting on long-term AI leadership with plans for a government-backed AI university and research hub.
