Sport is shaped as much by off-field decisions as by results on the field today, with major contract moves, a franchise leadership shake-up and a reported federal investigation sharing space with a landmark NFL opener abroad. The competition itself still delivers standout performances, from San Francisco’s dominant start in Australia to a big return in the Yankees’ lineup.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn reportedly open a criminal investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers over Kawhi Leonard’s contract arrangements. The inquiry centers on allegations that the team helped structure deals that violated NBA salary-cap rules, placing one of the league’s marquee franchises under scrutiny beyond the usual disciplinary reach of the NBA.

The NFL opens a new chapter internationally as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the league’s first regular-season game in Australia. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Brock Purdy throws three touchdown passes and San Francisco controls the game throughout to begin its season with an emphatic win.

Dylan Larkin reports to Detroit Red Wings training camp after requesting a trade earlier in the summer, but he does so without the captaincy. The team strips him of the role after six seasons wearing the “C,” leaving a core player in place for now while his longer-term future with the franchise remains unresolved.

Anthony Volpe makes an immediate impact in his return to the New York Yankees, driving in five runs in a 10-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He goes 3-for-5 and breaks the game open with a seventh-inning grand slam as New York completes a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium.

Newcastle United moves quickly to secure Lewis Hall’s future, signing the defender to a new contract through 2031. The improved long-term deal shuts down recent speculation after interest from Manchester United and gives Newcastle renewed certainty around one of its young defensive pieces.

Tottenham Hotspur also settles a lingering contract question, with Lucas Bergvall signing a new deal after previously indicating he wanted to leave. The agreement keeps the Sweden midfielder at Spurs and brings an end to uncertainty over whether the club would lose another young player.

San Francisco’s opening-day win is tempered by an injury to tight end Jake Tonges, who hurts his knee or leg during the game against the Rams in Australia. He leaves the field on a cart and is taken to the locker room, putting an immediate note of concern into the 49ers’ strong start.
