The day in sport turns on staying power, from leadership and long-term deals to comebacks that reshape results late. Off the field, the NFL and Giants lock in familiar figures, while on it, a dramatic Formula 1 charge, a revived veteran signing and late swings in football and golf drive the headlines.

Roger Goodell secures a four-year contract extension as NFL commissioner, keeping him in charge through the 2030 season. The new agreement, approved by team owners, extends his tenure beyond the deal that had been due to expire in March 2027 and gives the league continuity at the top for the rest of the decade.

Kimi Antonelli wins the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after starting 19th on the grid, completing a remarkable drive through the field. The race features early incidents and sustained wheel-to-wheel action, and Antonelli caps the comeback by taking the lead in the closing laps after a duel with George Russell.

Great Britain and Ireland complete a late comeback to beat the United States 13½–12½ and win the Walker Cup at Lahinch. The victory is their first in the event since 2015, with the contest staying tight into the final stages before the home side edges ahead to seal a historic result.

Everton rescue a 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester United as Ainsley Maitland-Niles scores a late equaliser on his debut at Hill Dickinson Stadium. United appear on course for the win before Everton rally, and Maitland-Niles finishes the turnaround with a long-range strike in the closing moments.

Burnley sign Jamie Vardy on a deal through the end of the season, bringing the veteran striker back into English football. The 39-year-old former Leicester City and England forward joins as a free agent, giving Burnley added experience in attack for the remainder of the current campaign.

Riley Greene powers the Detroit Tigers to a 6-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians with two home runs and four RBIs. Greene goes 4-for-5 and drives the offense throughout a game Detroit controls from start to finish, providing the key blows that keep Cleveland off balance all night.

The New York Giants agree to a two-year contract extension with quarterback Jameis Winston, keeping him with the team in a backup role. The move adds stability to the depth chart behind Jaxson Dart and commits the Giants to Winston for longer as an experienced option at the position.
