Extreme weather and energy technology dominate the science file today, as storms and flood disasters expose immediate climate risks while companies push new tools for cleaner power. The mix is one of near-term hazards and longer-term adaptation, from Pacific cyclone threats to offshore wind and solar-building experiments.

Hurricane Polo lashes Mexico’s Pacific coast with heavy rain as it tracks near the shoreline, bringing flood concerns to coastal communities over the next several days. At the same time, Tropical Storm Nolo approaches Hawaii, putting forecasters and emergency officials on alert across a wide stretch of the Pacific.

Nepal is still grappling with the aftermath of the August 26 flood, with thousands of people still missing and humanitarian needs continuing to grow a month later. Damage assessments remain underway as authorities and aid groups work through the scale of destruction left by the fast-moving disaster.

Envision Energy introduces the EN-252/16.7, a new offshore wind turbine built for high-wind conditions and aimed at international markets. The company positions the model as a next-generation machine focused on performance and reliability in demanding offshore environments, where larger and tougher turbines are increasingly in demand.

ClearVue begins a real-world trial of power-generating solar windows at a hotel in Macau, moving the technology beyond laboratory testing. The project is meant to measure how much electricity the windows produce and how they affect heat inside the building, two key questions for commercial use.
