The day’s science news is dominated by natural hazards and the human pressures that surround them, from a strong Pacific earthquake and a new Atlantic storm to wildlife deaths under investigation in East Africa. Elsewhere, the environmental footprint of development and the risks tied to coasts and oceans also come into focus.

A strong earthquake of about magnitude 6.1 to 6.4 strikes the Papua New Guinea region on Sunday. Seismic agencies differ slightly on the exact reading, but the quake is large enough to draw regional attention in a country that sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

Ten lions are found dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and authorities say preliminary findings point to suspected poisoning. Investigators have not publicly identified the source or substance involved, but the deaths raise fresh concern about threats facing one of Africa’s best-known wildlife populations.

Tropical Storm Fay forms in the northern Atlantic, the U.S. National Hurricane Center says. The storm is currently far from land and is not expected to threaten coastal areas, but its formation adds another named system to the Atlantic season as forecasters continue to track activity over open water.

Members of the Aeta Hungey community in Capas, Tarlac say they face uncertainty as the Pax Silica tech hub expands across Philippine grasslands. Tribal leaders say they were not consulted in advance and still lack clear information on whether the project will affect their land, homes, and livelihoods.

Tributes continue for Greg O’Neill after a fatal shark attack, with friends and community members recalling his connection to the ocean and his role in bringing people together. The response centers less on the attack itself than on the life of a man remembered as deeply woven into his coastal community.
