Science news today centers on two big themes: the changing physical frontiers around us and the tools being built to navigate them. New measurements sharpen the scale of polar ice loss, while governments and companies push space and artificial intelligence deeper into strategy, research, and everyday technology.

Greenland and Antarctica have lost more than 12 trillion tons of ice since 1979, based on satellite observations and a new long-run analysis. The findings quantify nearly five decades of shrinking ice sheets at both poles and add to evidence of large, sustained changes in Earth’s frozen regions.

A related assessment puts combined ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica at about 11.3 trillion tonnes since the 1970s and links that decline to more than 1.1 inches of global sea-level rise. The estimate, roughly 31.4 millimeters, underlines the real-world impact of long-term polar melting beyond the ice sheets themselves.

Gen. Dan Caine says U.S. forces must prepare for possible combat around the Moon as well as in Earth orbit, widening the military view of space as an operational theater. The remarks reflect a broader push by the Trump administration to treat cislunar space as part of future strategic competition.

Novo Nordisk is partnering with Anthropic to use Claude Science and other advanced AI models in drug discovery. The company aims to speed parts of research and development, showing how pharmaceutical groups are moving generative and frontier AI from pilot use toward core scientific workflows.

Canon has introduced the EOS R8 Mark II, a redesigned entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera with a more retro-styled body and a major practical upgrade: in-body image stabilization. The added stabilization improves handheld shooting and marks one of the clearest functional differences from the original EOS R8 launched in 2023.
