A strong earthquake in Peru leads the day, while several other stories turn on people caught in sudden danger or institutional turmoil. Elsewhere, two fishermen survive days adrift in the Pacific, a reporting team is mistakenly detained at a US military base, and political and sporting organizations face scrutiny over internal culture and handling of crises.

A powerful earthquake of about magnitude 6.6 to 6.7 strikes Peru, with seismologists placing it in the country’s southern or central-southern region. The differing magnitude figures reflect routine variations in early measurements, but the event is treated as a single significant quake felt across part of the Andes.

Further details place the Peru earthquake in the southern Andes near the Ayacucho region at about 1 p.m. local time. The US Geological Survey identifies it as a magnitude 6.7 event and gives its depth and location, while authorities report no immediate deaths or major damage in the first aftermath.

Two Mexican fishermen are found alive after five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. The men survive by clinging to, and later sheltering inside, a blue cooler until they are spotted and rescued, ending an ordeal that leaves them exposed for days on open water.

Five reporters and two military personnel accompanying them are briefly detained at gunpoint at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The group arrives to cover an event when security personnel, believing they are attempting unauthorized entry, remove them from their vehicles before the misunderstanding is resolved.

Sue Gray says working in Keir Starmer’s Downing Street operation became unbearable and marked by distrust. The former chief of staff describes fearing that conversations were being recorded and leaked, offering a stark account of tensions at the heart of the UK prime minister’s office.

The Sydney Swans crisis triggers a strong backlash from fans, with anger, disbelief and trauma shaping the public response. Coverage also highlights that women supporters appear to carry a disproportionate share of the fallout, widening the story from a club controversy into a broader question of culture and harm.
