Natural hazards dominate the science file today, with a powerful Indonesian earthquake and a storm hitting Hawaii showing how quickly seismic and weather events can turn deadly and disrupt basic services. Alongside the immediate damage and rescue work, researchers and space agencies offer a reminder of science’s longer horizon, from Antarctic climate shifts to Japan’s next deep-space mission.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes Indonesia’s Flores island, killing dozens, injuring many more and damaging hundreds of homes and other buildings. Thousands of residents evacuate as aid begins to reach affected communities, where some areas also face disruptions to basic services in the aftermath of the quake.

Rescue teams continue searching through collapsed buildings, rubble and landslide-hit areas in eastern Indonesia a day after the quake off Flores island. The work focuses on finding survivors and recovering bodies in communities where damaged structures and unstable terrain complicate access and slow the response.

Hurricane Lala lashes Hawaii with heavy rain and strong winds, cutting electricity to tens of thousands of customers and prompting warnings of life-threatening conditions. The U.S. National Hurricane Center lists maximum sustained winds at 75 miles per hour, placing the storm at Category 1 strength as it moves through the islands.

The same Hawaii storm is also tied to at least one death as flooding, rough seas and roof damage hit parts of the state. The fatality is linked to a car crash on the Big Island during dangerous weather, underscoring the broader risks from storm-driven rain and coastal conditions.

Japan is preparing to launch its Martian Moons eXploration mission, an uncrewed effort to collect samples from Phobos, the larger of Mars’ two moons. The mission is set to depart from Tanegashima in the coming months and aims to return material that could shed light on Solar System origins and conditions related to life on Earth.

Scientists report preliminary evidence that grass is spreading in some parts of Antarctica, pointing to visible vegetation change on the continent. The findings raise climate concerns because expanding plant growth suggests environmental conditions are shifting in places long defined by ice and extreme cold.

An Alaska runner is hospitalized after using bear spray during an encounter with a brown bear on the Wolverine Bowl trail near Anchorage. The person later sought medical help, and the incident highlights the hazards of close wildlife encounters in backcountry areas during summer recreation.
