Natural hazards dominate the day in science news, with a deadly earthquake in Colombia and volcanic disruption in Sicily underscoring the immediate human and infrastructure risks of geologic events. At the same time, new climate data show Western Europe enduring exceptional heat, extending the season’s pattern of extremes.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes western Colombia, and the death toll rises sharply as rescuers reach damaged communities and officials assess the destruction. Reports place fatalities from more than 70 to above 100, making it the deadliest development of the day as collapsed buildings and widespread damage complicate emergency response.

Western Europe posts its hottest June–July period on record, with an average temperature of 21.62 degrees Celsius, about 2.79 degrees above normal. The new Copernicus benchmark surpasses the previous record set in 2022 and comes as the region faces drought and wildfires, reinforcing the scale of this summer’s heat.

Mount Etna erupts in Sicily, sending volcanic ash into the airspace around Catania and forcing the airport to halt incoming flights. The disruption affects the island’s main aviation hub and shows how even a localized eruption can quickly interfere with transport and daily activity well beyond the volcano itself.
