Science news today spans both deep time and the night sky, with discoveries and observations inviting people to look outward and backward at once. A newly found Roman wreck off Sicily adds to the archaeological record of Mediterranean trade, while the Perseid meteor shower offers a widely visible celestial event under favorable conditions.
A Roman shipwreck believed to be more than 2,000 years old is discovered off Sicily near Mazara del Vallo. The wreck appears to preserve part of its cargo, including vessels linked to the transport of ancient wine, offering archaeologists fresh evidence about maritime trade, ship construction and commercial routes in the ancient Mediterranean.
The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with strong viewing prospects across much of the northern hemisphere. Under clear, dark skies, observers may see roughly 50 to 100 meteors an hour, making the annual shower one of the most accessible and active skywatching events of the year.
