International justice and institutional power drive the day in politics, from major war-crimes proceedings in The Hague to fresh tests of executive authority in Washington and Europe. At the same time, leaders face personal and political strains, with health, appointments and private loss briefly entering the public arena.

Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci is convicted of war crimes by the Hague tribunal and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The case centers on abuses committed during Kosovo’s 1998–99 war, when Thaci was a leader in the Kosovo Liberation Army, and marks one of the most consequential rulings yet tied to the conflict.

The U.S. House again votes to curb presidential war powers in Iran, approving a resolution that would require congressional authorization for continued military action. The measure reflects a renewed struggle between lawmakers and the White House over who controls the scope and duration of armed conflict as fighting continues.

The European Union signals a possible new model for its global partnerships, with Ursula von der Leyen saying Canada could become the bloc’s first associate member. The proposal, unveiled during her State of the Union address with Prime Minister Mark Carney present, points to closer political alignment between Brussels and Ottawa.

Rodrigo Duterte appears at the International Criminal Court for his first public court appearance in more than a year. Judges in The Hague use the pretrial hearing to address procedural issues in the former Philippine president’s case, bringing renewed attention to the legal process surrounding one of Asia’s most controversial former leaders.

Nicole Saphier faces senators at her confirmation hearing as Donald Trump’s nominee for surgeon general. Her appearance before the Senate health committee represents the administration’s latest attempt to fill a post that has remained vacant, putting both her qualifications and the administration’s public-health message under scrutiny.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa steps back from public engagements after returning from the BRICS summit, with the presidency citing ill health and medical advice. Other officials are asked to stand in where needed, creating a temporary pause in his public schedule at a politically visible moment after the international gathering.

The family of Charlie Kirk says it plans legal action over his killing at Utah Valley University, alleging serious failures by the university and police in the events leading up to his death. The move seeks damages and shifts the case into a new political and legal phase focused on institutional accountability.

Barack Obama announces that Sunny, the Obama family dog, has died at 13. The former president describes Sunny as a beloved member of the family, turning a private loss into a brief public moment that resonates beyond politics because of the dog’s visibility during the Obama years in the White House.
