Geopolitics drives the business agenda today, with trade threats, war risks and sanctions policy shaping markets, investment and central-bank thinking. At the same time, governments and companies move to secure strategic supply chains, underscoring how security concerns now spill directly into commerce and economic policy.

President Donald Trump threatens the European Union with serious new tariffs if it proceeds with an associate membership arrangement for Canada. He calls the proposal laughable and signals Washington is prepared to respond through trade measures, opening a new potential front in transatlantic economic tensions.

India warns the United States against imposing new tariffs linked to purchases of Russian oil, saying it will defend its trade and energy security interests. The dispute raises the risk of strain in a major bilateral economic relationship as Washington seeks to increase pressure on Russia over Ukraine.

The Bank of England leaves its main interest rate unchanged at 3.75% but warns it could still raise borrowing costs if inflation pressures build. The bank points in particular to Middle East conflict as a risk to the inflation outlook, showing how geopolitical instability is feeding directly into monetary policy.

Trump says he hopes the U.S.-Iran conflict is nearing an end, even as fighting broadens between Saudi forces and Iran-backed Houthi fighters. Saudi airstrikes in Yemen and Houthi drone and missile attacks on Saudi cities deepen regional instability, adding to concerns over energy markets and wider economic disruption.

Russia and China veto a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have kept experts in place to monitor sanctions on Iran. The move weakens an international oversight mechanism tied to Tehran’s nuclear program and adds another layer of uncertainty around sanctions enforcement and the broader regional security environment.

Trump says the United States is making major progress toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland and says a location could be announced very soon. A long-term U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank would carry strategic and budget implications as security priorities continue to shape government spending.

Critica says it has produced a second batch of rare earth carbonate at 58% total rare earths from its Jupiter project in Western Australia. The repeat result suggests progress in developing a supply of materials used in magnets and other heavy rare earth applications, an area of growing strategic industrial interest.

ICE agent Christian Castro is arrested in Minneapolis on assault and false-reporting charges tied to a January shooting in which he allegedly wounded a Venezuelan man through an apartment door. He is booked into Hennepin County Jail and held on $200,000 bail after months of legal disputes and delays.
