Business news is shaped by pressure on cross-border money flows, from political donations and crypto enforcement to tariffs and trade balances. At the same time, consumer-facing retail remains fragile, with a prominent fashion group collapsing despite signs of better trading.

Ministers are considering tougher residency checks for some political donors after Reform UK received £72 million from crypto entrepreneurs Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. The move focuses on whether major donors satisfy existing rules linking the permissibility of UK political donations to residency status, raising the prospect of enhanced scrutiny for large cross-border fortunes.

The US Justice Department is seeking to forfeit about $61 million in cryptocurrency that prosecutors say comes from illicit Iranian oil sales laundered through Binance. The civil case alleges the funds moved through trading accounts tied to two Chinese companies, underscoring Washington’s effort to use crypto seizures to enforce sanctions and target energy-related revenue streams.

A new round of US tariffs on a limited set of Canadian goods has now taken effect. The measures are narrower than a broad escalation across Canadian exports, but they still add friction to a major trading relationship and show that tariff policy remains a live tool in North American commerce even when applied to only a small group of products.

India’s trade deficit narrows in August as exports rise more quickly than imports. Data from the commerce department show the overall deficit, including services, falls to $9.41 billion from $11.62 billion a year earlier, suggesting external demand and trade performance improve even as global growth and supply chains remain uneven.

Cue Clothing and sister brand Veronika Maine have entered receivership or voluntary administration after continued sales pressure. The collapse comes despite signs that trading had begun to improve, highlighting how prolonged weakness in discretionary spending and operating strain can still overwhelm established retail businesses.
