Markets and producers face a day shaped by pressure on costs, currencies and capital. Japan’s latest reserve data point to heavy sales of U.S. Treasuries to help finance record intervention in support of the yen. Holdings of foreign securities fall by $87.8 billion at the end of August from a month earlier, broadly in line with the scale of the currency operation carried out in late July and August.
The yen climbs to its strongest level in six months, rising to about ¥154.04 against the dollar in London trading. The move carries Japan’s currency beyond the high reached after its recent intervention campaign, suggesting official action and shifting market sentiment are combining to give the yen more sustained support.
