Business news centers on governments using economic tools more aggressively, from sanctions and trade threats to disputes over energy and finance. At the same time, markets track signs of resilience in the U.S. economy and fresh strains from fast-moving financial innovation and heavy pre-IPO fundraising.

Donald Trump says he will halt some U.S. trade with countries where the United States runs a deficit unless the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. He argues high U.S. rates create an unfair disadvantage in global trade, tying monetary policy directly to trade relationships and raising the prospect of a new escalation in economic brinkmanship.

The U.S. economy adds 162,000 jobs in August, beating expectations and offering a stronger-than-forecast reading on the labor market. The gain suggests hiring remains intact despite broader uncertainty over growth, interest rates and trade policy, and it gives policymakers and investors a fresh signal about the economy’s underlying momentum.

The U.S. Treasury sanctions a Turkish bank and two subsidiaries over ties to Iran, seeking to restrict Tehran’s access to international finance. The move forms part of Washington’s broader pressure campaign on Iran and targets financial channels the administration says help sustain the Iranian government’s access to funds.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei says his government will sanction oil companies involved in drilling near the Falkland Islands, sharpening a long-running sovereignty dispute with Britain. The planned measures focus on a new offshore oil project in the British-controlled territory and add commercial pressure to Buenos Aires’s renewed territorial claims.

Anthropic nears a $15 billion revolving credit facility ahead of a planned initial public offering, marking a sharp expansion from a far smaller facility arranged last year. The enlarged borrowing capacity would give the artificial intelligence company substantial financial flexibility as it prepares for one of the market’s closely watched potential listings.

AMC Entertainment chief executive Adam Aron urges Robinhood to stop issuing and trading tokenized AMC shares, saying they risk creating a quasi-fake market for the stock. He argues such products could divert demand from AMC’s actual shares and leave buyers without the ownership rights attached to traditional equity.
