Trade and financial pressure dominate the business agenda, with Washington preparing a new escalation against Iran and tariff disputes widening across the Americas. Alongside that geopolitical strain, company results show a more mixed picture, from stronger insurer profits to tighter manufacturing margins and sharp market volatility in a small-cap stock.

The United States plans to roll out new measures against Iran next week that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent describes as unprecedented. The package is presented as a major escalation in economic pressure, aimed at isolating Iran financially and tightening U.S. sanctions policy at a time of heightened regional tension.

Brazil has activated its economic reciprocity process in response to U.S. tariffs, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva framing the move as a formal legal answer to trade actions by Washington. The step opens a mechanism for Brazil to prepare retaliatory or balancing measures under its existing economic law.

Canadian businesses are largely avoiding a last-minute rush to move goods across the U.S. border before President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff deadline. Instead, many firms are taking a wait-and-see approach, suggesting uncertainty over policy and costs is discouraging aggressive shipping decisions despite the looming trade risk.

Venezuela’s government and opposition are both seeking access to roughly $4 billion in gold held at the Bank of England. After U.S.-backed talks, the two sides signal a shared push to have the bullion returned or otherwise made available, giving the long-disputed reserve new importance in political and financial negotiations.

Aviva posts a 24% rise in first-half operating profit to £1.33 billion, beating expectations as performance improves at its Direct Line unit. The result points to stronger momentum at the insurer, with the turnaround in that business helping lift overall earnings in the six months to June 30.

Ashok Leyland reports a modest rise in June-quarter profit as revenue increases but margins come under pressure. Earnings edge higher year on year, while Ebitda remains broadly flat and operating margin narrows to 10.1%, indicating that topline growth does not fully translate into stronger profitability.

Accent Resources surges about 5,233% in a dramatic share-price move that stands out even by small-cap market standards. The spike is tied to unusually heavy or heightened trading activity rather than a clearly established business development, underscoring the volatility that can grip thinly traded stocks.
