Tech’s biggest story today is how software, finance, and geopolitics are increasingly colliding. In New Jersey, a DMV coding error mistakenly put about 6,600 noncitizens on voter rolls, underscoring how routine digital systems can have real civic consequences even when officials say no election outcome was affected. At the same time, Apple is reshaping consumer hardware sales with a new Klarna-backed “Apple Upgrade” leasing program, betting that subscription-style access may become as important as ownership. In AI, the race is accelerating on several fronts: Microsoft has struck a multibillion-dollar deal with France’s Mistral to build out European infrastructure and offer more locally controlled AI services, while Google rolled out new Gemini Flash models and a cybersecurity variant as it hints at Gemini 4. Hovering over all of it is Washington’s warning that alleged Chinese use of stolen U.S. AI intellectual property could trigger sanctions.
